Scriptures That Have Carried Me
These are the passages God has used to steady my heart, shape my decisions, and remind me of His character. Each one has become a pillar in this season.
1 Timothy 6:6
“But godliness with contentment is great gain.”
Contentment isn’t resignation — it’s trust. In seasons where nothing feels stable, God has been teaching me that true gain isn’t found in circumstances changing, but in Him shaping my heart.
Job 26:4
“With whose help have you uttered words, and whose breath has come out from you?”
If there is one thing I have learned from Joshua, it is that every breath is a precious gift from God. When you consider that gift of breath is necessary to speak words, it is a powerful reminder that every word I speak is also a gift from God. This verse has been a sobering reminder to be careful with my words and to use them to glorify God.
Proverbs 19:11
“Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.”
I grew up with an unhealthy sense of justice. If something fell short, I felt it was my responsibility to point this out. Through God's word, I have learned that there is a better way. When I am slow to anger, I am able to see the bigger picture and respond with grace. There is blessing in not defining someone by their shortcomings, but instead overlooking offenses and extending mercy.
Psalm 34:4
“I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.”
Think of the order of actions found in this verse. The first sequence is seeking the Lord. The second sequence is the Lord answering. The third sequence is the Lord delivering from fears. This verse has been a reminder to me that my focus needs to be on seeking the Lord, not considering my fears. When I seek the Lord, He is faithful to answer. He shows himself and when my eyes are focused on Him, He delivers me from my fears.
Colossians 3:19
“Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.”
Crisis can sharpen our edges. This verse has been a gentle reminder to love Sue with tenderness, patience, and grace — especially when the weight feels unbearable.
Romans 12:1–2
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
For many years, this verse has been a cornerstone of my walk with Christ. He was the perfect sacrifice who gave His life for me. In response to His sacrifice, I am called to present my life as a living sacrifice to Him. This verse has been a reminder that my life is not my own, but it belongs to Christ.
